SEATREKKERS 2006 VOYAGE - Preparations

Preparations

Well—we're finally ready!!!!! These past few weeks have been incredible as we got everything ready for the Great Circle Route trip. Back at the Cape , Jean worked hard to complete all taxes, finalize the plans to ‘leave' the house for eight months and worked with our team in Jacksonville to complete all the modifications to the boat. Nothing's easy and the planning for this trip has been no exception. We've made lists of everything including food needs, friends to see and things to do. We've personally helped the country's GNP with our many purchases of maps and charts, electronics, clothing and other ‘things' we'll need along the way. I keep reminding Jean that we're, for the most part, not really leaving the United States . I think we're now prepared as we possibly could be and ready for another exciting adventure!!!!! As usual I'll (Priscilla) be keeping the journal and posting all entries.

Our Next Adventure

We made our way to Florida last week of March so that we could be present as changes to the boat were finalized and to ensure that we could leave, as planned, on Sunday April 2 nd . Thanks to Tena and David, our on-site boat management team in Jacksonville , the boat was in perfect shape when we arrived. Tena has been the lead project manager for all of the boat changes and that's saying a lot. Given the scope of the changes, she's had to manage more than fifteen different ‘worker teams' at any given time and keep them all on schedule! She's coordinated the installation of TV and weather electronics, the building of office cabinets and storage shelves, the painting of the boat, the installation of new upholstery, the overhaul of key aspects of the engine and on and on. Tena and her husband David have been invaluable to us in our efforts to make this journey. They both are very familiar with Californians and can fix anything (you'll see David in one of the pictures, giving us a lesson on the changes he made to the anchor windlass). Tena and David know everything about boats from anchors to engines to carpet!!! They've helped us enormously in our understanding of the boat and in gaining a full appreciation for its strengths and weaknesses. Jean and I both agree that we'd be lost without them!!!! (Watch for a picture of Tena spraying Jean with water as she worked today on cleaning the boat for its launch)!!

Jacksonville 's been a good ‘home away from home' for us. Both Lamb's Yacht Center and the Huckins Yacht Corporation have been great resources for us. Through these yards, we've been able to keep the boat in good shape and have some excellent modifications made. Our hats go off to all the teams who worked on Ocean Flyer .

Jean's been as organized as ever and as over-planning as ever. She's able to think of things that no one else would care about—but her attention to detail will undoubtedly ensure that this long journey will be as safe as possible. Jean's planned a lot of interesting aspects to the trip to keep it ‘new' and for our guests and us to have a wonderful experience. We're looking forward to the side trip ‘up the Potomac ' and definitely looking forward to the many locks and canals that we'll be covering. It'll be very exciting to see so many new parts of the US and Canada and especially to see them from the water.

Speaking of preparations....there are quite a few bridges that we'll be going under during the course of this adventure. To insure that Ocean Flyer would be able to clear as many as possible, Jean had her electronic equipment constructed with the ability to 'fold down' to provide additional clearance. Jean, David and Tena worked with the TV and weather satellite equipment manufacturers to build a hinged platform for the satellite receiver and related equipment.

We're very grateful to all of you who have indicated an interest in joining us for parts of the trip. Now that we're actually ready to start we'll be able to sort through the requests and respond to each of you. Things have been so hectic that it's been impossible to respond to each of you. We were, however, pleasantly surprised by the response but we have had some parts of the Route requested by more than one guest. We'll do our best to meet everyone's needs. On this first leg of the trip, which has some great stops in Savannah ,GA, Charleston, SC and Beaufort, SC as well as Beaufort, NC, Jean will be joined by two friends from Cape Cod and fellow Cape Cod Sail and Power Squadron members. Joan Croft and Sally Clifton both arrived yesterday and have helped us with the last details of the preparations. They're both experienced boaters and will be of great help to Jean as the journey officially begins.

On Sunday, April 2nd the team of Jean, Sally and Joan left the dock in Jacksonville to officially begin the Great Circle Route. They'll stay as a team all the way to Norfolk, Virginia. Below are some pictures of them leaving the dock and some pictures that I was able to take as they made their way under their first bridge and up the Ortega River.

I'm not aboard Ocean Flyer for the first few weeks of the trip. I'm driving the car to Massachusetts with a few days stop in New Jersey to visit with some friends. Back on the Cape by the end of the week, I'll finalize the plans to leave the house for eight months and close out some other loose ends. On Tuesday, April 18 th , I fly from Providence , RI to Norfolk , VA and will meet up with Ocean Flyer and the team.

Please stay tuned . Jean, Sally and Joan will be adding journal entries as they travel up the East coast!!!!!!
