DISTANCE: 109 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The route follows the eastern shore of Lake Ontario to Cape Vincent , NY where we will enter the St. Lawrence River . We will visit the “ Thousand Islands ” area of the St. Lawrence beginning in the U.S. and then crossing into Canada at Rockport , Ontario . For the next 2 ½ months we will be in Canadian waters. We head back up the St. Lawrence into the northeast part of Lake Ontario to the city of Kingston , ON.

ROUTE: KINGSTON , ON to LAYOVER

APPROX. DATES: JUNE 14 to JUNE 24

DISTANCE: O

DESCRIPTION: Jean and Priscilla are leaving the boat in Kingston , renting a car and returning home to Cape Cod for a family reunion.

ROUTE: KINGSTON , ON to TRENTON , ON to PORT SEVERN , ON

APPROX. DATES: JUNE 25 to JULY 15

DISTANCE: 355 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The route between Kingston and Trenton traverses the northern part of Lake Ontario via the Bay of Quinte . At Trenton , we enter the Trent-Severn Waterway and proceed northwest for 240 miles (42 locks) to the Georgian Bay ( Lake Huron ) town of Port Severn , ON. The waterway wanders through a series of rivers and lakes passing through many interesting villages. The water is clean and about the temperature of Cape Cod ocean waters at that time of year. This portion of the trip is advertised to be exceptionally beautiful.

ROUTE: PORT SEVERN , ON to KILLARNEY, ON

APPROX. DATES: JULY 16 to AUGUST 5

DISTANCE: 169 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The Severn River enters Georgian Bay not far from Midland , ON . Georgian Bay is off the northeast portion of Lake Huron and is largely rural, remote and desolate. The northern edge of Georgian Bay is called “30,000 Islands ” where summer cottages and pine trees occupy the islands. There are thousands of beautiful anchorages, but only a few places where a boater can go ashore because most of the land is privately owned. The water is clear, the landscape is unspoiled and there is excellent fishing. Many of the remote islands have blueberries by the millions, but watch out for bears who also enjoy the blueberries!

ROUTE: KILLARNEY, ON to MACKINAW CITY , MI

APPROX. DATES: AUGUST 6 to AUGUST 21

DISTANCE: 188 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: At the north end of Georgian Bay , the route enters the narrow strait past Little Current into the North Channel ( Lake Huron ). This area provides another interesting cruising area with pristine waters and wilderness. The setting is even more rural than Georgian Bay and some of the exposed rocks date back to the formation of the earth. There are many fine anchorages, protected coves in pristine woods and uninhabited islands to explore. After stops in Little Current, Spanish River and Blind River , we depart the North Channel and head to DeTour Village , MI , on Lake Huron where we clear U.S. Customs. Then we travel through the Straits of Mackinac into northeastern Lake Michigan with a possible stop at Mackinac Island .

ROUTE: MACKINAW CITY, MI to CHICAGO , IL

APPROX. DATES: AUGUST 22 to SEPTEMBER 4

DISTANCE: 401 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The route heads south along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan . Towns passed are Lake Charlevoix , Leland, Frankfort , Muskegon , Holland and Michigan City , ending in the Chicago area around Labor Day.

ROUTE: CHICAGO to ST. LOUIS, MO

APPROX. DATES: SEPTEMBER 7 to SEPTEMBER 15

DISTANCE: 339 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: We plan to spend a few days touring Chicago . Then the route heads south through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (3 locks) to Joliet , IL and the junction with the Illinois River . We proceed down the Illinois River for 273 miles (8 locks) passing through Seneca, Henry, Peoria, Beardstown and Grafton, IL to the junction of the Mississippi River about 20 miles north of St. Louis. We plan to spend a few days visiting St. Louis .

ROUTE: ST. LOUIS to PADUCAH , KY

APPROX. DATES: SEPTEMBER 18 to SEPTEMBER 22

DISTANCE: 266 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The 218-mile route south on the Mississippi (2 locks) is reportedly the most unpleasant part of the entire Circle Route. The Mississippi overflows its banks from time to time, and because of this huge levies have been built alongside the river and wing dams have been constructed along the shoreline. Because of the high levies, cruisers cannot see much from the vessel's deck. The wing dams have silted in the space behind what were once islands, and now there is nowhere to anchor except in swiftly flowing deep channels. The river always has a heavy current – 2 to 3 knots in normal conditions and up to 8 knots in flooding conditions. At Cairo , IL , we leave the Mississippi and enter the Ohio River (2 locks) for about 58 miles to its junction with the Cumberland River . About 10 miles before this junction, we pass through Paducah , KY.

ROUTE: PADUCAH to PICKWICK LAKE , TN

APPROX. DATES: SEPTEMBER 25 to OCTOBER 5

DISTANCE: 234 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: About 10 miles past Paducah is the junction of the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers . The trip on the Cumberland River is only 33 miles ending at Barkley Lock and Dam where the boat is raised 57' to the level of Barkley Lake . Just south of the dam, there is a canal that joins the Cumberland River to the Tennessee River . The Tennessee River provides a waterway south for over 190 miles to the entrance to the Tenn-Tom Canal . The trip on the Tennessee is a typical river run through wilderness and recreation areas. The river is wide and has many good bays and anchorages located just off the channel (1 lock).

ROUTE: PICKWICK LAKE to DEMOPOLIS , AL

APPROX. DATES: OCTOBER 6 to OCTOBER 16

DISTANCE: 253 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: We enter the Tenn-Tom Canal at Pickwick Lake . This 253-mile canal (10 locks) connects the Tennessee River at the Tennessee/Mississippi border with the Tombigbee River at Demopolis , AL . The shores of the Tenn-Tom have not been heavily developed yet, and it offers a pleasant trip through quiet rural settings broken only by small friendly communities. Along the route we pass through Fulton and Tupelo , MS .

ROUTE: DEMOPOLIS , AL to MOBILE , AL

APPROX. DATES: OCTOBER 17 to OCTOBER 25

DISTANCE: 217 S.M.

NOVEMBER 7TH THROUGH NOVEMBER 28TH

GUNTERSVILLE, ALABAMA TO FAIRHOPE, ALABAMA

November 7 th through November 13 th

At port in Guntersville, Alabama

DESCRIPTION: The final stretch of inland water is the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway. These rivers wind through rough isolated countryside. Toward Mobile , the shoreline becomes distinctly swampy. There are many places to get out of the waterway and anchor safely. Halfway between Demopolis and Mobile is the Coffeeville Lock and Dam. This lock is significant because on the lower side we are back at sea level for the first time since entering the Erie Canal at Troy , NY . We are back in salt water and have to once again contend with tides and currents.

ROUTE: MOBILE , AL to CARRABELLE , FL

APPROX. DATES: OCTOBER 26 to NOVEMBER 15

DISTANCE: 265 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: The route enters the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile and follows the west coast of Florida on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway . We are in protected water once leaving Mobile Bay . The route passes through Pensacola , Fort Walton Beach , Panama City and Apalachicola .

November 29 to December 17

Fairhope, Alabama to Fort Myers, Florida

ROUTE: CARRABELLE , FL to FORT MYERS , FL

APPROX. DATES: NOVEMBER 16 to NOVEMBER 23

DISTANCE: 337 S.M.

DESCRIPTION: From Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs, the route runs for 181 miles in a straight line across the unprotected Gulf waters. Some night cruising would most likely be necessary. Alternatively, we may travel closer to the shore around Florida 's “ Big Bend ” in 3 or 4 day trips. This longer route is characterized by shallow waters and lots of crab pot floats. From Tarpon Springs the route passes by Clearwater , St. Petersburg , Sarasota and Venice .

ROUTE: FORT MYERS to JACKSONVILLE , FL

APPROX. DATES: NOVEMBER 24 to DECEMBER 15

DISTANCE: 430 S.M. – OKEECHOBEE ROUTE

705 S.M. – SOUTHERN TIP ROUTE

DESCRIPTION: Upon reaching Fort Myers , we will decide whether to go around the southern tip of Florida or shorten the trip by heading across the Okeechobee Waterway to Stuart and Florida 's east coast. We plan to be back in Jacksonville by mid-December where we will leave the boat. We will be home on Cape Cod for the Christmas holidays.
